How to Celebrate Grandparents’ Day

If you need some inspiration for how to celebrate Grandparents’ Day, try one of these eight ideas to make the day memorable:

Interview the grandparents.

How much do you actually know about your grandparents? Do you know where they were born? How they met for the first time? When they moved into their house? Get answers to all these questions and more by interviewing your grandparents about their lives. This is a fun activity to get kids involved in. Encourage them to brainstorm fun questions to keep the interview lively.

Research family history together.

If your grandparents are big genealogy buffs, then consider doing some research together into your family tree through Ancestry.com or other means. If your grandparents would like it, you can even get one of the at-home DNA tests to go even further back in your ancestry! You can also plan a trip to places that were important in your family’s history, whether that’s visiting the local church or traveling internationally.

Host a family reunion.

If you haven’t had a family reunion in a while, Grandparents’ Day is the perfect excuse to host one. Reunions take time and planning to pull off, especially if family will need to come in from out of town. We recommend getting the ball rolling ASAP if this is an avenue that you want to pursue.

Cook a meal together.

Making and eating food is a beautiful way to spend quality time together and turn a meal into a memorable occasion. If you pursue this route, make sure that everyone actually helps — don’t leave grandma and grandpa to do all the cooking and cleaning, even if they try to shoo you out the kitchen!

Exchange gifts.

You can never go wrong with a gift exchange on Grandparents’ Day. Since most grandparents have already accumulated a lifetime of stuff, we recommend being pretty choosy with what you give them. Select practical gifts for their stage of life, such as nursing home clothing and men’s elastic waist pants for seniors.

Make photo keepsakes.

Photo scrapbooks are a classic gift idea. They’re not very durable and they can get repetitive year after year. Instead, consider getting some family photos printed on a variety of objects, including ceramic mugs, blankets, canvas wall hangings and more. These unique gifts are sure to be treasured by any grandparent for many years to come.

Have a sleepover.

The grandkids probably love sleeping over at your grandparents’ house, so why not turn it into a special event for Grandparents’ Day? They can make a blanket fort and “camp” inside the house, stay up late reading stories and make shadow puppets on the wall.

Send a handmade card.

If you live far away and can’t visit them in person for Grandparents’ Day, a handmade card is a nice substitute. Have a craft day with the kids and ask them to make unique cards for grandma and grandpa. They will be sure to appreciate the labor of love and give the artwork a place of honor on their fridge!
