Buying footwear online can often be challenging. Sizing varies widely across different manufacturers, which makes it difficult to confidently order a size.
When it comes to purchasing footwear for elderly men or women, there are added challenges that further complicate the issue. Edema (swollen feet), which is very common with seniors, causes large fluctuations in the size of the foot. The effects of edema can change drastically on a daily basis. Additionally, seniors are susceptible to other foot problems like hammertoes, bunions, complications from diabetes (neuropathy), and general foot pain. Finally, the need for proper fitted shoes is imperative, as slips and falls become an increasing concern. These difficulties make sizing footwear even more challenging.
If you have come to Silvert’s and are looking to purchase footwear for yourself or an elderly loved one, here are our suggestions to guide your buying decisions.
1. Do NOT go up in size
Most people don’t believe us when we tell them not to go up in size. Loved ones often assume that because the extent of a senior’s swollen foot, they must go up one or two sizes. However, this is ill-advised and extremely dangerous. Adding length only makes tripping and falling more likely. Adaptive footwear is specially designed to accommodate all types of swelling and foot conditions. Simply order the size you would typically order and the fit will surprise you.
2. There are no half sizes, so go DOWN in size
Like the previous tip, this is not a suggestion that people expect – but trust us! Once again, the adaptive nature of Silvert’s footwear allows for a secure and comfortable fit throughout its size range. So, if you’re looking for an 8.5, be sure to order an 8 for the best (and safest) possible fit.
3. When in doubt, MEASURE the foot
We know it is not always easy to get an aging loved one out to a shoe store to get a proper measurement. In this case, simply measure the length and width of the foot with a measuring tape or ruler. With this information, Silvert’s customer service specialists will be able to suggest the best option over the phone. Some customers have even gone as far as mailing traced outlines of their feet in order to find the right shoe – and it worked. They will surely find the right shoe for your needs!
