What is Adaptive Clothing?

What is adaptive clothing, and how can it help you care for your loved one? Let Michelle introduce you to our line of struggle-free apparel, and how it can give them an easier life.

Video transcript

My name is Michelle, and I am a caregiver. I am here to aid those of you who have taken on the responsibility of caring for a person who is facing physical challenges. Adopting this role can be overwhelming and intimidating. For many of you, it is the first time you have been faced with caring for a loved one with physical limitations.

Many decisions need to be made to ensure your loved one receives the best care possible, from hiring home care professionals, to exploring nursing home options, and various medication plans, there is one fundamental contributor to your loved one's comfort that is often neglected.

Patients suffering from the effects of physically debilitating conditions do not have the motor skills to dress themselves with the average clothing sold in shopping malls.

Buttoning a shirt, putting on pants or tying a shoe lace may now present a challenge leaving your loved one frustrated, depressed, or injured from a fall.

Adaptive clothing and footwear offer unique products to accommodate special needs:

Open back, seated dressing designs allow wheelchair-restricted individuals to be dressed comfortably with minimal movement and full coverage.

Limited mobility should not limit a loved one's clothing options. A line of Adaptive Clothing specifically designed for wheelchair dressing offers a wide range of products including shirts, pants, dresses, tracksuits and nightgowns.

The ability to be dressed from a seated position greatly reduces the risk of accidental falls, and the open back design makes changing easy and convenient for individuals with incontinent issues.

With adaptive clothing, garment changes can be done efficiently, and without injury to the individual or the person dressing them.

Adaptive undergarments are also available with convenient finger loops to relieve the pressure from hands and arms while fastening.

For ease and functionality, the majority of Adaptive Clothing features VELCRO® and snap fastenings strategically placed in the front, sides or back of the garment, to avoid pressure points and reduce the amount of movement required for self-dressing.

Clothing and footwear are easily manipulated to fit any size, and Easy Touch fastenings minimize the amount of strength and dexterity required to dress.

As motor skills decline and cognitive abilities decrease I have found that Adaptive Clothing eases the burden of dressing for caregivers and increases the comfort level of those they care for. Overall I have found Adaptive Clothing enhances the quality of life for the patient.

Adaptive Clothing has been designed to anticipate the specific stages of various diseases in order to help families and caregivers adjust.

For example, it is not unusual for Alzheimer's patients to disrobe in public places when confused and disoriented — anti-strip garments with reinforced fastening have been designed to solve compulsive disrobing issues.

Similarly, footwear has been designed specifically for individuals with Diabetes, Edema, swelling and podiatry concerns who require non-constrictive socks and slippers to encourage circulation and deter sores and irritations. Skid-resistant socks and footwear aid in preventing falls and facilitate wheelchair transfers.

As the largest clothing firm for seniors, Silverts has considered the challenges of handicapped and geriatric living, and created a product line that can be worn day or night, inside and out.

Whether casual or classic, your loved one can be dressed functionally, comfortably and affordably without sacrificing fashion.
