Arthritis, lowered hand dexterity and partial paralysis can make buttons, small openings and laces impossible! Hidden VELCRO® brand fasteners/Easy Touch closures in adaptive apparel can make garments and footwear comfortable and functional for the wearer. In addition, elasticized waists make it easy to pull on garments when challenged by lowered hand dexterity.

Incontinence issues? Silvert's easy dressing adaptive apparel designs allow for quick changes.

Lowered mobility, paralysis and wheelchair dependent individuals who have difficulty or are unable to weight-bear and their caregivers enjoy the features of adaptive clothes and footwear. Adaptive clothing/apparel offers struggle-free seated dressing. Difficulty with upper arm paralysis can be solved with adaptive tops that offer struggle-free solutions. Easy dressing adaptive apparel designs allow for quick changes when incontinence may be an issue.

Adaptive tops, blouses and shirts completely open up, allowing the individual's' arms to be slid into the garment sleeves without ever having to raise/lower their arms or struggle with small neck openings. The back overlap is then folded over and domed/snapped into place. Domes are strategically placed on the garment's shoulders to avoid pressure points. Adaptive tops, blouses and shirts are fashionable and comfortable while offering the functionality of struggle-free dressing.

The back of adaptive clothing pants completely open up. Legs are inserted into the pant legs from a seated position and drawn up to the inner thigh. Caregivers simply snap the generous back overlap in place, providing complete coverage and discretion. Assisted disrobing is just as easy. The person has been effortlessly dressed by the caregiver from a seated position with no weight-bearing required!

VELCRO® brand fasteners/Easy Touch closures aid those with limited hand dexterity. Adjustable closures are able to accommodate different foot widths and podiatry concerns.

Diabetic feet, swollen feet, swollen ankles and edema issues are addressed with non-constrictive diabetic socks.

Fear of falling? Slip resistant adaptive footwear helps alleviate the fear of accidental falls. Skid-resistant socks assist in making wheelchair transfers safer.

What is Adaptive Clothing?

Video transcript

My name is Michelle, and I am a caregiver. I am here to aid those of you who have taken on the responsibility of caring for a person who is facing physical challenges. Adopting this role can be overwhelming and intimidating. For many of you, it is the first time you have been faced with caring for a loved one with physical limitations.

Many decisions need to be made to ensure your loved one receives the best care possible, from hiring home care professionals, to exploring nursing home options, and various medication plans, there is one fundamental contributor to your loved one’s comfort that is often neglected.

Patients suffering from the effects of physically debilitating conditions do not have the motor skills to dress themselves with the average clothing sold in shopping malls.

Buttoning a shirt, putting on pants or tying a shoe lace may now present a challenge leaving your loved one frustrated, depressed, or injured from a fall.

Adaptive clothing and footwear offer unique products to accommodate special needs:

Open back, seated dressing designs allow wheelchair-restricted individuals to be dressed comfortably with minimal movement and full coverage.

Limited mobility should not limit a loved one’s clothing options. A line of Adaptive Clothing specifically designed for wheelchair dressing offers a wide range of products including shirts, pants, dresses, tracksuits and nightgowns.

The ability to be dressed from a seated position greatly reduces the risk of accidental falls, and the open back design makes changing easy and convenient for individuals with incontinent issues.

With adaptive clothing, garment changes can be done efficiently, and without injury to the individual or the person dressing them.

Adaptive undergarments are also available with convenient finger loops to relieve the pressure from hands and arms while fastening.

For ease and functionality, the majority of Adaptive Clothing features Velcro and snap fastenings strategically placed in the front, sides or back of the garment, to avoid pressure points and reduce the amount of movement required for self-dressing.

Clothing and footwear are easily manipulated to fit any size, and Easy Touch fastenings minimize the amount of strength and dexterity required to dress.

As motor skills decline and cognitive abilities decrease I have found that Adaptive Clothing eases the burden of dressing for caregivers and increases the comfort level of those they care for. Overall I have found Adaptive Clothing enhances the quality of life for the patient.

Adaptive Clothing has been designed to anticipate the specific stages of various diseases in order to help families and caregivers adjust.

For example, it is not unusual for Alzheimer’s patients to disrobe in public places when confused and disoriented — anti-strip garments with reinforced fastening have been designed to solve compulsive disrobing issues.

Similarly, footwear has been designed specifically for individuals with Diabetes, Edema, swelling and podiatry concerns who require non-constrictive socks and slippers to encourage circulation and deter sores and irritations. Skid-resistant socks and footwear aid in preventing falls and facilitate wheelchair transfers.

As the largest clothing firm for seniors, Silvert’s has considered the challenges of handicapped and geriatric living, and created a product line that can be worn day or night, inside and out.

Whether casual or classic, your loved one can be dressed functionally, comfortably and affordably without sacrificing fashion.
